DISCOVERING THE "PETITE CAMARGUE"
Aigues-Mortes & its surroundings

The "Petite Camargue", which is located between the two branches of the River Rhône, is a protected nature reserve with lakes and lagoons, long fine sandy beaches with warm ocean rollers, always under a hot summer sun. Thanks to its serene climate, the country is a paradise for a huge number of birds whether migrating or sedentary. Benefitting from a nature and vegetation unique in Europe, it is well-known to ornithologists of the entire world.

In the heart of the "Petite Camargue" stands the fortified city of Aigues-Mortes. In a desert of ponds and marshes, it became the first mediterranean port of the Capetian monarchy. The Constance Tower, one of the most majestic pieces of architecture of medieval times, became in 1685, one of the biggest Huguenot prisons in the Kingdom. The tower offers an amazing view of the countryside, from the Mediterranean coast to the Cevennes mountains.
