LIRMM is comprised of over 350 people (as of October, 2009), including 160 researchers and lecturer-researchers, 150 PhD candidates and 40 engineers, technicians and administrative personnel.

Careers in research

Researchers generally focus on scientific production, promoting results, distributing scientific information and teaching through research.

To carry out these missions successfully, researchers engage in a wide variety of activities, including: identifying research subjects, elaborating research protocols in consultation with engineers, technicians and team-mates, conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting results, writing and publishing articles, participating and getting involved in symposiums and seminars, and more.

In addition to activities concentrating on scientific production directly, researchers also participate in training PhD candidates and may teach at the university level. During their career, researchers frequently lead teams, direct scientific projects and participate in administrative aspects related to research. Researchers may also register licenses and file patents, applying their knowledge to the benefit of existing companies, as well as creating their own companies.

Careers in engineering, technical services and administration

Mechanics, secretaries, computer scientists, glass-workers, animal care specialists, chemists, cartographers, graphic artists, landscapers, nurses, lawyers… all these professions contribute to the professional activity branches (BAP) that make up the body of engineers and technicians who work with researchers in their research activities.

Engineers define technical specifications for major scientific projects, leading them from design to implementation, and managing logistics. They build prototypes and original devices, and develop new methods and techniques as required. They are responsible for important activities that support research, including administrative and financial management, communication, network systems and much more.

Technicians assist researchers and engineers at all levels in implementing and carrying out experiments. They perform measurements and tests, apply experimental protocols, and maintain equipment of all kinds. Technicians also participate in every sort of activity related to supporting research, including secretarial services, administrative and financial management and communication.
