General overview of the LIRMM

Picture: Lirmm_vu_du_ciel_petit_format.jpgThe Montpellier Laboratory of Informatics, Robotics, and Micro-electronics (LIRMM in French) is a cross-faculty research entity of the University of Montpellier 2 (UM2) and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). LIRMM is located at the Saint-Priest campus of University of Montpellier 2.

LIRMM director Jean-Claude König and his three assistants, Marianne Huchard, André Crosnier and Michel Renovell, are responsible for LIRMM operations, along with scientific department managers. See the laboratory organization chart.

The LIRMM's research activities position the LIRMM at the heart of Information, Communications and systems Sciences and Technologies.

LIRMM research activities cover a broad range of topics, ranging from informatics to systems, from technology to people and applications, including:
  • Design and verification of integrated, mobile and communicating systems,
  • Agent-based modelling of complex systems,
  • Research on algorithms, bioinformatics, human-machine interaction, robotics and more.

Work is carried out in three main scientific research departments, each of which is organized into project teams.

The Informatics department (manager: Christophe Paul - assistants: Vincent Berry, Esther Pacitti) covers topics that range from the leading edge of modern mathematics to applied research: graph algorithms, bioinformatics, cryptography, networks, databases and information systems (data integration, data mining, coherency maintenance), software engineering (programming languages, objects, components, models), artificial intelligence (learning, constraints, knowledge representation, multi-agent systems), human-machine interaction (natural language, visualization, Web semantics and e-learning).
The Microelectronics department (manager: Patrick Girard, assistants: Serge Bernard and Laurent Latorre) carries out cutting-edge research in the fields of designing and testing integrated systems and micro-systems, with a focus on architectural aspects, modelling and methodology.

The Robotics department (manager: Philippe Poignet, assistants: David Andreu and Frédéric Comby) concentrates on issues related to synthesis, monitoring and management of complex dynamic systems (robots, robot/live interface), as well as navigation, localisation and steering of local and remote autonomous vehicles, and image analysis, coding and processing.

One of LIRMM’s strengths is that each of the lab’s fields of scientific expertise covers theory, tools, experiments and applications.

Our research generally finds applications in a great diversity of domains, such as biology, chemistry, telecommunications, documentation, and the medical field... as well as in domains more specifically related to laboratories: informatics, electronics, and automation.

LIRMM’s mission is to generate:
  • Knowledge: an average of 300 publications per year for international audiences,
  • Researchers: directly (PhD and post-doc) and indirectly (LMD participation),
  • Products: physical objects and/or software prototypes,
  • Business activity: industry partnerships, incubation of innovative start-ups,
  • Scientific activities: national and international communities.

Today LIRMM unites nearly 350 people, including 160 researcher-lecturers and pure researchers, 150 PhD students and 40 technician and engineer employees (October 2009).

LIRMM’s appeal in terms of recruitment is measured by its ability to attract talent, not only from all around France, but from around the entire world. This includes students (half of the PhD candidates recruited for Autumn 2008 were foreigners), as well as permanent staff (6 recruits in this period from Japan, Singapore, Italy and Romania).

The LIRMM offers two doctoral programs: one in Computer Science and the other in Automatic Systems and Microelectronics.

In addition to support from the CNRS and the University of Montpellier 2, the LIRMM participates in many national and European research programs.

LIRMM research activities are supported by the general services of our:
