Abstract
This talk will report on experiences from a 15 year long career working on data warehousing and business intelligence, within both industry and academia.

The focus of the talk will be the data arehousing challenges posed by complex real-world domains and the research these challenges have inspired.
Examples of this include work on imprecise multidimensional data and complex dimension hierarchies, inspired by health-related data warehouses.

However, to illustrate that the interaction between research and practice is a two-way street, another example is work on gradual multidimensional data aggregation that started out as theoretical work and a number of years later found a surprising application within managing data on embedded computers for farming machinery.

Torben Bach Pedersen is a full professor in the Database and Programming Technologies group of Aalborg University.
He is co-director of the newly established Center for Data-Intensive Systems (daisy) and serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Data Warehousing and Mining and Journal of Computing Science and Engineering.
Torben Bach Pedersen founded and continue to run the Business Intelligence Technology (BIT) knowledge exchange network. Since 2000, he has collaborated with more than 15 industrial partners. Current partners include Geomatic and TARGIT.
