face="Arial,Helvetica"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Le 5 avril dernier, lors dun d&icirc;ner-conf&eacute;rence pr&eacute;sent&eacute; conjointement par lAPEC et le <i>Canadian Center for Ethics and Corporate Policy </i>(CCECP) sur le th&egrave;me : &laquo; A Fresh Approach to Business Ethics : current business ethics trends &raquo;, une cinquante de participants ont eu loccasion dexp&eacute;rimenter une nouvelle forme de d&icirc;ner-conf&eacute;rence, favorisant le dialogue entre les participants sur les sujets pr&eacute;sent&eacute;s.</font></font> <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; La discussion a d&eacute;but&eacute; par une allocution, par les conf&eacute;renciers invit&eacute;s, sur trois sujets tr&egrave;s actuels en &eacute;thique, &agrave; savoir : (1) le profil de comp&eacute;tences dun praticien en &eacute;thique (Cornelius von Baeyer, vice-pr&eacute;sident de lAPEC); (2) la logique et les b&eacute;n&eacute;fices pour une entreprise davoir une orientation &eacute;thique (Stephen Cross, membre du CCECP et du &laquo; Ethics in Action Awards &raquo;); (3) ainsi que la n&eacute;cessit&eacute; d&eacute;tablir des standards communs en mati&egrave;re de responsabilit&eacute; sociale (George Khoury, membre du Conference Board).</font></font> <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Les participants ont par la suite eu la chance de discuter une des cinq questions propos&eacute;es pour la discussion avec les membres de leurs tables respectives, questions traitant des sujets expos&eacute;s pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment par les conf&eacute;renciers, pour finalement pr&eacute;senter le fruit de leur discussion &agrave; lensemble des participants. Gerry Gunn and Cst. Cathy Ruskin of the Edmonton Police Service, Youth Services division, and from Noel Kunst, Principal, and student Jannette Purnell of Harry Ainlay Composite High School.&nbsp; We heard about the School Resource Officer program initiated by the Edmonton Police Service, its work with school administrators and parents, and alternatives to traditional punishment or disciplinary actions.</font></font> <p><font face="Arial"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harry Ainlays initiatives in character education include the identification of the core values that represent that school (identified by students and staff), poster programs relating to the core values, monthly nominations for students whose behaviours best represent the values (soon to be extended to include nominations of staff by students), and personal initiatives undertaken by the new principal in being more visible and accessible.&nbsp;</font></font> <p><a NAME="CalgaryRT"></a><font face="Arial"><font size=-1><b><font color="#008080">Calgary Roundtable </font></b><font color="#000000">by Susan Quinn</font></font></font> <br><font face="Arial"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We had two presenters at the March 7 roundtable, both from the Calgary Board of Education.&nbsp; One was Janice Trylinski, Manager, Operations Policy.&nbsp; The other was George Veenhuysen, Co-ordinator, Corporate Security, CBE. Their topic was: Updating a public sector Code of Conduct in education: challenges and opportunities.&nbsp;</font></font> <p><font face="Arial"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Calgary Board of Education is one of the largest school boards in Canada with about 99,000 students and 7000 staff. The CBE offers programs at over 220 sites in Calgary. This presentation looked at the CBE's current Code of Conduct policy and reflected on moving into the future of workplace ethics in education.&nbsp; The immense task that is ahead of the CBE and the complexity of the issues were interesting factors to examine.&nbsp; A discussion ensued about some of the topics and feedback was solicited by the presenters from the participants.&nbsp;</font></font> <p><b><font face="Arial"><font color="#FFCC33"><font size=+0>Ethics news / Nouvelles sur l'&eacute;thique</font></font></font></b> <p><a NAME="summit"></a><b><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font color="#008080"><font size=-1>Canada to Talk about CSR at the Summit of the Americas</font></font></font></b> <br><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font color="#000000"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; According to the Oppenheimer Report published February 18 in the Miami Herald, Canada, which is to play host to the 34-country Summit of the Americas in Quebec on April 22, is planning to introduce the issue of good corporate citizenship at the meeting, senior Canadian officials told a Miami reporter at the end of February.&nbsp; U.S. officials say Bush might support the idea.</font></font></font> <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font color="#000000"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Marc Lortie, a senior Canadian diplomat in charge of the Quebec summmit's organization, said the meeting is likely to invite private firms to participate in social programs, and might consider recommending voluntary codes of ethics for corporations.&nbsp; "There are various proposals that are being discussed," added Peter Boehm, Canada's ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS).&nbsp; "Various countries are saying: 'We are focusing so much on anti-corruption activities in the public sector, what about the private sector?'"</font></font></font> <p><a NAME="100_f"></a><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font size=-1><b><font color="#008080">Les 100 meilleures entreprises socialement responsables aux &Eacute;.-U. en 2001</font></b> par Allison Marchildon</font></font> <br><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font size=-1>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lint&eacute;r&ecirc;t croissant d&eacute;montr&eacute; par les entreprises pour prendre au s&eacute;rieux leur r&ocirc;le de citoyenne corporative constitue, selon le magazine <i>Business Ethics</i>, est un signe encourageant &agrave; une p&eacute;riode o&ugrave; le gouvernement semble de moins en moins pr&eacute;sent. Dans son &eacute;dition de mars-avril 2001, le magazine <i>Business Ethics</i> pr&eacute;sente donc les 100 entreprises publiques am&eacute;ricaines qui sont consid&eacute;r&eacute;es comme les meilleures entreprises socialement responsables.
