Visual representations are used extensively within new user interfaces. Powerful visual approaches are being experimented for data manipulation, including the investigation of three-dimensional display techniques. On the other hand, many existing applications use images to enhance the quality and richness of data manipulation services. Both areas need further research and applications to experiment and improve actual solutions or to invent new ones. IFIP 2.6 has already devoted two successful conferences to explore the domain of visual information management. This conference is the third in the series. As the preceeding editions, the conference aims at covering both areas: visual interfaces to DBMS and DBMS management of visual data. The conference addresses researchers and practitioners active or interested in user interfaces, human-computer communication, knowledge representation and management, image processing and understanding, multimedia database techniques and computer vision. Topics of interest The following list is given to illustrate items of particular interest for this conference. It is not intended to be restrictive and all submissions related to some extent to visual databases will be considered. - next generation interfaces - modeling of visual information - visual representations - image understanding - three-dimensional interfaces - image processing - visual query languages and browsers - feature extraction - visual programming - feature based indexing techniques - query processing - parallel computing for image processing - iconic systems - image-based queries - visualization of results - spatio/temporal reasoning on images - automatic generation of visual interfaces - maps - visual user interfaces management systems - data compression - video databases - memory organization and data structures - spatial data management - benchmarks - applications, in particular scientific, environmental, medical, educational Conference Chair: S.
