Sequence-structure-function relationship of proteins with repetitive sequences. Kajava, A, J Proteins having arrays of tandem repeats represent at least 14% of all known proteins. Sequencing projects revealed a big number of proteins having tandem arrays of 5 to 30 residue long repeats. The known 3D structures of these proteins have a solenoid-like arrangement. Their elongated shape and large molecular weight hamper conventional X-ray and NMR studies, therefore, theoretical deciphering of the sequence-structure-function relationship of such proteins promises to be a fertile research subject of structural bioinformatics.
