History of meta-heuristics

Abstract : The presentation, intended for a large audience, starts by tracing the contours of combinatorial optimization problems, the fundamental concepts of metaheuristics and the various existing metaheuristics. After this short introduction to metaheuristics, the history of metaheuristics will be traced over the last decades through the authors’ own vision. The chronological presentation will be avoided in favor of a more personal presentation grouped in five periods: (0) the pre-theoretical period, (1) the first period, (2) the methods period, (3) the structures and metaphors period and (4) the scientific period.
